Every August, Tradies National Health Month shines a light on the health and wellbeing of Australia’s tradie workforce. Now in its 13th year, the initiative led by the Australian Physiotherapy Association encourages proactive, preventative care across worksites to reduce injury and support long-term physical and mental wellbeing of our tradies.

Take a look at some of these eye-opening statistics:

  • Over 90% of tradies report experiencing pain or injury related to their work each year
  • 24% are concerned they’ll have to retire early due to the physical strain of their work.
  • 50% of tradespeople experience pain strong enough to be classed as severe, yet many continue working without professional support.
  • 54% of tradies say current skills shortages are negatively impacting their mental health

The message is clear: support for our tradies is needed, and it must start early.

The demands of trade work go beyond the physical. Safe Work Australia reports that mental health conditions now account for over 9% of serious workers’ compensation claims in construction, often leading to extended time off. Early intervention is critical. Physiotherapy and workplace health assessments continue to play a vital role in preventing physical and mental injuries from becoming long-term impairments. Research shows that tradies who receive professional support early are twice as likely to return to full duties within six weeks.
